Acyclovir, the active ingredient in Generic Zovirax 200 mg, is used to treat herpes infections of the skin, lip, and genitals; herpes zoster (shingles); and chickenpox. It does not cure herpes infections but decreases pain and itching and promotes healing. Sometimes acyclovir is given to help prevent the infection from coming back. Acyclovir also treats shingles and chickenpox infections.

Your Zovirax tablets may be swallowed whole with a glass of water, or dispersed in a quarter of a glass of water and then swallowed. The usual dose of Acyclovir in the treatment of an outbreak of herpes is one 200 mg tablet every four hours while awake for five or ten days. This dose may be varied by your doctor depending on the response. Your doctor and pharmacist will be able to tell you: how many tablets to take at each dose, how many doses to take each day, and when to take each of your doses. If your doctor advises you to stop taking Acyclovir 200mg ask your pharmacist what to do with any remaining tablets.
Side effects depend upon the dose you are taking and the infection being treated. Side effects that usually do not require medical attention: diarrhea, dizziness, headache, increased sensitivity to the sun, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting. You should report to your doctor as soon as possible if you have: confusion or hallucinations, increased thirst,redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth, reduced amount of urine passed, seizures, skin rash or hives, stomach pain.
