There are many reasons for hair loss but some 95% of all cases are due to a condition called "androgenetic alopecia." It is normal for a person to lose approximately 100 hairs every day, but these hairs then regrow several months later. When the hair loss exceeds new hair growth, baldness results. Once this process starts, hair loss is progressive and often continues for a lifetime. Temporary hair loss may be provoked by medications such as Beta Blockers or oral contraceptives Switching to another medication or chaning the dosage may stop excessive hair loss.
Patients must take Finasteride for one year or longer before its effects in preventing hair loss and re-growing hair can be accurately assessed. Finasteride takes up to a year or more to exert its full effects in both preventing hair loss and in re-growing hair. During the first six months you may note some thinning of your existing hair. It is important to be patient during this period. You should continue the medication for at least one year before you and your doctor can assess its benefits.
Finasteride is a comparatively safe medicine but like all other medicines, it does have certain side effects. The major side effect of Propecia finasteride is a low sex drive or loss of erection (temporary impotence). However, these side effects go away over time or when dosages are adjusted. It is designed for hair re-growth on the head only. Most reported cases of sexual dysfunction occurred soon after starting the medication, but there have been reports of sexual dysfunction that have occurred at later points in time.
