Take levothyroxine 50mcg by mouth usually once a day on an empty stomach, 1/2 to 1 hour before breakfast, or as directed by your doctor. Swallow the tablets with water, before food. Patients over 50 years with heart disease should take 25 micrograms a day or 50micrograms every other day, the dosage may be increased by 25 micrograms a day every 4 weeks. You may not be able to take levothyroxine, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special monitoring if you use insulin or take diabetes medicine by mouth, ask your doctor if your dose needs to be changed when you start using levothyroxine. Signs and symptoms of increased thyroid hormone levels may not be seen for up to 5 days.
Like all medicines, Levothyroxine tablets can cause side-effects, although not everybody gets them. In most cases, you will need to take levothyroxine for the rest of your life. Taking levothyroxine over long periods of time may cause bone loss, which can lead to osteoporosis. Stop using levothyroxine and get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Symptoms of low thyroid levels include fatigue, muscle aches, constipation, dry skin, weight gain, slow heart rate, sensitivity to cold, or dry brittle hair that tends to fall out easily. These symptoms should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication. If they persist or become bothersome, notify your doctor promptly. Headache, nervousness, trembling, sweating, increased appetite, diarrhea, weight loss or insomnia may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly.
